スコットランド民謡。日本では卒業式や図書館とか美術館の閉館を告げる目的に使われるが、原曲は昔の友達に再会できた喜びを歌った曲だ。ニューイヤーのカウントダウンに、新年に希望を託してこの歌を歌う。
1940年の映画「哀愁」（WATERLOO BRIDGE）では英国軍大尉（ロバートテイラー）とバレリーナ（ヴィビアンリー）が、ロンドンテムズ川に架かるワーテルロー橋で出会い、恋をしてこの曲でワルツを踊る。その姿は二人が互いになくてはならない存在となり、底なしの悲劇に向かっていく予兆のようで、優美ながら哀しい。ロバートテイラーにとってもヴィビアンリーにとっても、この映画が自分が主演した作品の中で一番好きだったと語っている。自分にも忘れられない映画だったので、ロンドンを旅行した時、感慨深くこの橋に立ち、映画の一コマ一コマを反芻しながら歩いて渡ったものだ。
2020年1月29日、英国のEU離脱協定案が可決されたとき、EU議会では、すべての議員が立ち上がり、これを歌った。去る側の英国議員のなかにも、まさかこんな結果になるなんて、と思いながら歌った議員も多かったろう。

I am singing [ Auld Lang syne ], Scotland Folk song. The text is a Scots poem written by Robert Burn in 1788. This is traditionally sung at the conclusion of New Years Eve.
Movie stars Robert Taylor and Vivian Leigh had dance with this music, that was unforgettable and beautiful in the movie tilted[ Waterloo Bridge] directed by Meriyn Leroy in 1940. The story is Army captain and ballerina met on the Waterloo Bridge during WW1, loved each other however end up in tragic.
on 29-January 2020,this song was sang by members of the European Parliament when the Brexit withdrawal agreement was passed, ending the UK membership in EU. Probably many members felt to be betrayed by people's choice of UK.
