私たちの国は、一滴の血も流さずに民衆の力で独裁者を倒したことがあっただろうか。私たちの国は、米軍基地を撤退させたことがあっただろうか。フィリピンは、それをした。
フィリピンはマゼランの航海以来330年間、スペインに植民地化された後、米国に売られ、太平洋戦争時3年間は日本に侵略された。戦後独立してもなお、独裁者マルコスの圧政下で長いこと戒厳令が敷かれていた。1983年大統領選挙のために米国から帰国したベニグノ アキノ上院議員は、飛行機から降りフィリピンの地を踏んだ瞬間に、大統領再選を狙うマルコスによって暗殺された。これが契機になって余りにも長いこと戒厳令を敷き、権力を欲しいままにしてきた独裁者に対する人々の怒りが爆発した。民衆は、マルコスの住むマラカニアン宮殿を取り巻き、エドサ通りを埋め尽くした。フレデイ アギラは、ギターを抱えプロテストソング「バヤンコ」（我が祖国）をデモの先頭に立って歌った。
1986年マルコス政権がピープルズ革命によって倒された翌年私たち家族は、フィリピンに赴任した。人々の革命を経た興奮は冷めやらず、レイテのような島ではまだ治世は混乱していたが人々の目は、輝いていた。10年の間に、レイテ島大洪水、セブ行き乗船沈没で2000人死亡、ピナツボ火山大噴火、ローマ法王訪比などいろんな出来事があった。まじかにこの国の大きな動きを身近で見て貴重な体験をしたと思う。

The Philippines was invaded by Spain for 330 years and later USA occupied then Japan did during world war2. Even though after independent, Philippines people suffered by dictator Marcos. In 1983 president candidate Senator Benigno Aquino Jr was assassinated by President Marcos. That was triggerd the People Power Revolution in 1986. Freddie Aguilar was always in front of peoples resistant and demonstration.
My family arrived in Leyte Philippines the following year of the Revolution, and still people and society were unrest and fragile. during nearly 10 years in the Philippines, we were witness of real country's history ,and it was great experience.
